Conservation Commission Minute 10/1/2012
Greenfield
Conservation Commission Meeting
October 1, 2012 (September Meeting)

Present:        Members - Carol Irvin, Neal Brown, Karen Day
Guests – John Gryval and Rocci Aguirre

Meeting called to order at 7:30pm.

John Gryval came in to discuss the town’s pending purchase of a generator for the town offices. The discussion focused on whether the town should purchase a propane or diesel generator, where it would be cited, and how either might affect the aquifer.

Rocci Aguirre from the Monadnock Conservancy discussed the easement they are purchasing from the Carbee’s on East Road. They are set to close at the end of October and would like help with the transaction costs for the project. The total transaction costs are nearly $26,000 and the Conservancy has raised funds for all but $15,000 of these costs. The Commission is supportive of this easement because (1) it covers about 58 acres, (2) it abuts other large easements and adds to a large area of conserved land, (3) it abuts the town forest, and (4) the Rand Brook runs through the northern section of the parcel. In addition, the easement includes a 100 foot buffer along Rand Brook, adding to the protection of that waterway. The Commission will hold a public hearing on this request during the next meeting scheduled for October 24.

We wrapped up discussion of the Blueberry Jamboree and how to overwinter the remaining blueberry bushes. Neal will take the lead on this work.

We also discussed the wetlands remediation plan for the easement on Steve Robertson’s land. We need to eradicate the bittersweet and buckthorn.  Carol will contact a local Boy Scout troop to determine their interest in taking on this project.

The meeting concluded with a review of the mail.
